FlashFeeD – A new centre for flash fiction

We missed the old weekly comps. While a few exist today (and VSS365 is thriving – well done Voima and others), we thought it would be helpful to look at introducing a new platform. So…

Welcome to our new flash fiction ‘comp’ and community participation initiative, FlashFeeD.

Why have we called it FeeD?

The start and end letters, FD, are taken from FlashDogs. But the word feed seemed to be fitting.

Here is the dictionary definition:

(1) To give food to

We want to give you the creative nourishment to inspire you, to help you grow and to watch you thrive with the support of others.

(2) supply with material or power

We want to supply you with prompts and encourage others to help you grow in the power of your writing and to help you reach your full potential.

(3) cause to pass gradually and steadily, typically through a confined space

Working with flash fiction is a challenge. It is not the poor cousin to longer writing, it is a very hard skill to master.

Each week we’ll post a prompt, a story element (with or without specific guidance) and a character limit (usually 2000 characters).

Full rules here:

Test prompt below (example only):

Story must include fiction element: Character (a salesperson selling a mystical potion).

Stories will be limited to 2000 characters (about 300 words), including the title.

Use the comment field to post stories, include your story title. Use the reply button on a particular story to provide positive feedback. Press the ‘like’ icon if you like a story.

If you’re registered, then you will be awarded DogTreats (community participation points) for posting stories, commenting etc.

The DogTreats will include badges for specific tasks or achievements (we may also award badges for special events, projects or previous achievements (such as FD anthology appearances)).

The DogTreats will also include ranks or levels. After certain milestones have been reached, you will achieve a new level. These are ranked by dog breeds, with small cute dogs to start and larger dogs (with bigger teeth) near the top of the ranks.

You’re all winners, so we won’t be providing judging. If you choose to take your ‘likes’ and comments as rewards, then we’re fine with that.

We hope this eases the workload on the competition and demystifies the murky and inconsistent world of judging.

We have tried to make this as easy as possible by enabling WordPress, Facebook and Twitter log-ins. If you use one of these methods it’s probably best to try to stick with it as we can’t guarantee the system will recognise your points using a different method.

Of course, you don’t have to register. We warmly welcome everyone that wants to participate in a friendly and positive community. If you do not register you will still be asked for your e-mail address and the first comment you make is likely to be held for moderation (to check for spam and content compliance). After this, your comments should be approved automatically. You won’t gain DogTreats by using this method.

Have a look below for some test comments that Emily and I have left to see what your DogTreats might look like. Please forgive the conversational nature and the fact that the comments are largely based on testing the DogTreats.

Massive thanks to Emily, who has been idea champion, beta tester and usual alpha dog.

  1. I love to ride my Velo

While riding my Velo, I felt a tad tipsy from my malt whisk.
I didn’t notice the man selling magic potions in the velodrome.

  2. My dog Stella is currently trying to sell me a magic potion that disables my memory so I will forget I already gave her lunch.

    1. Looks like the Twitter log-in works fine now. It’s also picking uop the fact that the FD e-mail is not linked to my MK e-mail – it was smart and realised via FB that the two things were both me and allocated the right icons.
      I’m a new user – with a low rating level 😦

  3. Yay. I want badges and stickers and to be a cool dog breed. Although my favorites are super mutts. Maybe I’ll upload Stella as my avatar.

*** THIS IS MK – changing your comment. Which was very easy. ***

      1. I used WordPress here. I also used Twitter, above, and got a small dog as a reward. Now I fear there are multiple Emily Streets. I’m so complicated.
